Gesture Controls Make Sony E-Reader Easy to Handle

The slick touchscreen and clean menus make the PRS-700 easy to befriend. Reading aficionados will appreciate the gesture-controlled page turns and the LED

User interface is a breeze. Handles PDFs like a pro. Sidelights are a blessing for considerate insomniacs

Screen looks better than it works: Major glare kills eyes, some text looks fuzzy, and touch controls are finicky

Sony PRS-700

Eyestrain, cramped fingers, sore wrists… these are the hallmarks of reading online. In fact, when doing so, usability experts assert that we're not really reading at all, and flip through websites so fast that we barely even register the information in...

Holds 350 books; easy to use; stylish and slim

No wireless access; have to buy books on computer; smaller selection than Kindle

Compared directly to its closest rival, Amazon's Kindle, the PRS-700 is more stylish and holds more books.

Sony Reader Digital Book (PRS-700)

The Amazon Kindle may be one of Oprah's favorite things, but Sony has been making e-book readers longer, and the sophisticated design of its latest, the Reader Digital Book PRS-700 ($399.99 direct) clearly displays this experience. With a...

Touch-sensitive screen. Streamlined interface. Attractive design

Pricey. Doesn't provide wireless download of titles (unlike Amazon's Kindle). LED sidelights aren't very strong

The Sony Reader PRS-700 is an elegantly designed, easy-to-use device for e-book fans. As long as you can deal with the steep price and the lack of wireless book buying, it's a good read.

Sony PRS-700BC Reader Digital Book

Sony's touch-screen e-book reader is good with PDFs and simple to navigate, but its screen is hard to read in direct sunlight. At $299, Amazon's Kindle 2 remains a slightly better deal for don't need native PDF support.

Native PDF support; touch screen simplifies navigation; solid all-metal construction; built-in LED reading light

Touch-screen reflectivity problems; more expensive than Amazon Kindle 2, yet lacks wireless delivery service

Nearly everything on the Sony Reader (other than the screen) is made of metal, which makes this device feel very solid, something that can't be said for less-expensive, plastic e-book readers like the Cool-er Reader and Foxit's eSlick. If you need a...

The e-book challenge: Sony Reader PRS-700 takes on Amazon's Kindle 2

The Kindle 2 e-book reader has become one of the best-known consumer tech products. Now, Sony's Reader PRS-700 is trying to get on top.

Whether you want to purchase an e-reader depends both on how much of a reader you are and how comfortable you are reading from a netbook, a smartphone or some other mobile device. There are sources for electronic literature that don't involve a...

Sony PRS-700 Reader Review: Blinding Glare Kills All Improvements

Though it must scare the crap out of the publishing biz, we will all one day carry ebook readers. In the US, Sony and Amazon have led the way with impressive E-Ink systems that prove that digital displays can be as readable as ink on paper. For this...

that left a lot of readers caught in the middle. The Kindle had usability benefits—download direct to device; nice button array—that the Reader did not. Meanwhile, the Sony had a friendliness to third-party files that Amazon did not share. Clearly, in...

Sony Reader PRS-700

As an avid book reader, I've been a fan of the Sony Reader line of devices since the PRS-500 came out 2 years ago. With the PRS-505, released last year, things got even better-- the 505 was faster, had a whiter virtual page and even better contrast....

Responsive touch screen and excellent user interface. Navigating through books, notes and where you left off in a book is quick and easy. Nice design, more attractive than the Kindle. The touch screen means there's no need for a hardware keyboard...

Screen has less contrast and clarity than earlier Sony Readers and the Amazon Kindle.

Sony has worked a near miracle with their touch screen and touch-centric user interface. The Reader is simply a joy to use in terms of ergonomics, control and navigation. This is by far the most natural way to manage, navigate and read books we've seen...
