Until this DVD player only used JVC

 

the player was excellent and as it was used in our living room

Worked great for a year

Powers down immediately when turning it on. Repair = $49 minimum

Progressive scan at great price

 

I replaced a $1000 Sony DVD player with this $139 player just to get progressive scan. (I know, but the $1000 model was several years old.) The picture on my HDTV was glorious, of course, and made the investment that much better.

The main feature of the JVC XV-S500BK DVD player is its progressive scan capability. The S500BK currently sells for $159 at amazon.com and represents a great value for a progressive scan DVD player (if you have an HDTV or an HDTV-compatible TV).
